Our story

Logo of a duckling with leaves and water ripples above the text 'The Ugly Duckling'.
Black and white drawing of a woman in a swimsuit sitting on a pool float, smiling, with a swimming pool in the background.
A black and white illustration of a person sitting at a desk with a laptop, speaking on the phone, with books and a coffee cup nearby.

A second table, six months later.

Butta la Pasta is the second restaurant from The Ugly Duckling Group, opening just six months after our first, Rosso Pizza Bar. If Rosso is where we found our footing in Amsterdam, Butta la Pasta is where we got comfortable — sleeves rolled up, pasta on the board, and a glass of something good already poured.

Pasta as it should be.

We started with a simple belief: that handmade pasta, honest ingredients, and a warm room are all you really need. No elaborate concepts, no unnecessary complexity. Just the kind of cooking that feels like someone made it for you personally — because at Butta la Pasta, they did.

More than dinner.

We wanted to create something Amsterdam was missing — a true Italian neighbourhood spot where you can drop in for lunch, linger through aperitivo hour, and stay for dinner without ever feeling rushed. A place where the door is always open and there's always room for one more plate.

Part of something bigger.

Butta la Pasta sits within The Ugly Duckling Group's growing family of Amsterdam restaurants — each one different in concept, united by the same belief that great hospitality is about making people feel genuinely welcome. We're just getting started.
